room with a view

Ambitions, views, collaborations

Text: Louise Schouwenberg

'A ROOM WITH A VIEW’ – few book titles appeal to the imagination as this one does, by the British author E.M. Forster (written in 1908, made into a film in 1985). The story largely takes place in a pensione in Florence, Italy, where a group of wealthy Britons is staying. After two of the main characters complain about the lack of views from their room, they are offered a room with a view. This room with a view recurs throughout the book and plays an important role.
The room without a view symbolises conservatism, narrow-mindedness and suppressed feelings, a phenomenon characteristic of the Victorian age. By contrast, the broad view from the new room is associated with openness and progressive values.
When Anne Mieke Eggenkamp and Alexander van Slobbe decided to rent an apartment specifically for the academy in early 2009, they explicitly looked for a ‘room with a view’. The space should offer a broad view, and not just literally; it also had to symbolise an open view towards the future.

Collaboration with:

Suzanne van der Aa

“For Design Academy Eindhoven’s apartment I have supplied two screen prints, entitled ‘False Food’ and ‘Cityguide’. Both come from a series of prints named ‘City Sides’ which I made in 2009. Thomas and I made our choices based on the colour tones that would fit in with the rest of the interior. I think it is an excellent development that Design Academy Eindhoven is offering a form such as this one to place different disciplines in an interior that will be used and experienced by a range of people, especially from the design world. It was very pleasant working with Thomas Eurlings.”

AHREND

“In close consultation with our clients, Koninklijke Ahrend NV furnishes spaces that will inspire people to give top performances. We make sure that people are able to work and learn in a professional, pleasant and productive environment that is beautiful, functional and sustainable. It was therefore only natural that we would contribute to Design Academy Eindhoven’s head office. As designers and manufacturers of recognisable, timeless ‘Dutch Design’-furniture, Ahrend offers a range that comprises chairs such as the Ahrend 350, the Ahrend 250 and the legendary Revolt; tables used worldwide such as the Mehes and Ahrend 500; and many other award winning chairs, tables, and filing systems. In the apartment we have placed three Revolt-chairs by Friso Kramer.”

Arco

“Arco represents innovation, workmanship and the development of expertise. It is Arco’s opinion that you can only develop truly new and surprising ideas and/or products when you are open to new and different points of view. Arco consciously seeks out different worlds that affect and inspire each other, and tries to connect these different spheres. Very important in this respect is that we encourage and collaborate with new design talent from the Netherlands as well as abroad. So for Arco it was only logical to collaborate with Design Academy on this specific project.”

ATAG Homeproducts

“ATAG has enjoyed working on this management apartment interior. Design Academy Eindhoven is a magnificent institution, one of the standard bearers of Dutch Design and the ideas behind it, which is why we naturally support it. ATAG, is the go-to brand, quintessentially Dutch with an international outlook, for kitchen appliances in an environment in which Dutch products form the centre of attention. At first we were approached by the supplier of the kitchen units, but very soon we were negotiating with the academy board. The thing that struck us immediately was the openness and the drive to really make something of the apartment. It has now been completely furnished and the result is stunning. State of the art, and let us not forget the wonderful views. The appliances ATAG has supplied include an induction hob with hood, a dishwasher, and a combination oven and combination steam oven. All the appliances within sight have been finished in high-grade Graphite black. Several products from this series have won design awards. We hope guests and users of the apartment will enjoy using our appliances!”

BECE

“We view our collaboration with Design Academy Eindhoven as a very pleasant experience. We have become inspired by the fresh views of these young students on the interior. They can teach us a great deal. As a source of inspiration we have offered our butterfly blinds to go in the apartment; an item that offers true innovation when it comes to window coverings. Something never seen before that offers window decoration a unique place in the home. The especially elegant panels are the defining characteristic of the butterfly blinds. The best known product for window coverings is the horizontal blind. This is also present in the apartment. We have tried to come up with ways to do something extra special for this product and to give it a new place within the interior. Customers can now choose matching or contrasting ladder tape designs and/or design pelmets. But we will continue our search for ways of giving this product a new feeling.”

Danskina

“It is great to immerse your guests in design as has been done here. And the result is quite impressive. The apartment has been very well executed and it is very wellbalanced. The products bring out the best in each other and form a unity. And our collaboration with Thomas Eurlings went very smoothly. He had a clear vision and brought a great deal of expertise. Together we chose two carpets. One of them is the Dune (Ulf Moritz), a carpet that can be hung from a wall as well, which gives an extraordinary effect. We are proud to have been a part of this project.”

Douwe Egberts

“Douwe Egberts is the number one coffee innovator in the Netherlands. Our contribution consists of two icons. The ‘Excellent 10’ is the best filter machine in the world and it has been on the market for decades. The ‘Senseo’ is an invention of a more recent date. Its introduction has been an unprecedented success. The Senseo’s design is full of character and it is instantly recognisable. With this coffee machine Douwe Egberts has once again transformed coffee drinking traditions in the Netherlands and beyond. As Douwe Egberts/Sara Lee we enjoy working with Design Academy Eindhoven because the students’ ideas can be hugely inspiring to us.”

EE Labels

“The connection between Thomas Eurlings and EE Labels (Van Engelen & Evers b.v.) dates back to when we set to work together on the project ‘Parels van Makkum’, commissioned by Koninklijke Tichelaar Makkum. Thomas genuinely loves workmanship and traditional production methods. As a company we are a Friend of the Design Academy’s because we hold design very dear, so it was only natural that we should find each other again for the decoration of this place. Our family business has been working with jacquard fabrics for 110 years; on a small scale for fashion labels, but also on a bigger scale such as for the plaids we have draped over the beds in the design apartment. These plaids are jacquard weaves with acrylic wool. You can process a beautiful logo to perfection using this technique. And the colours can be exactly attuned to the overall interior.”

Eikelenboom

"A project such as this acts as an ambassador for Dutch design. And more importantly, to us it is a good way of presenting ourselves, especially since Design Academy Eindhoven is such a high-profile institution. We have donated a number of lamps from the Hollands Licht collection: the Lotek and Lotek XS (Benno Premsela), the Twolight (Boonzaaijer & Spierenburg) and the Light Ball (Scholten en Baijings). If this collection is to be developed further, we would like to collaborate more often with the academy. It is a great way for us of spotting young talent at an early stage.”

Forbo

“With great enthusiasm Forbo Flooring has accepted the challenging invitation to participate in this showroom of ‘Dutch Design’ with some of our products. We have chosen two linoleum flooring products. In the large space we have applied Touch Solo, a new cork-based linoleum which excellently expresses the tactile nature of the material. The texture of the surface intensifies the colours. The pleasantly neutral nature of this floor forms the perfect backdrop for some of the distinct designs in the showroom. In the hallway we have used an experimental prototype as flooring: a linoleum which incorporates post-industrial waste material. The skin from coffee beans, which separates when the beans are roasted and is usually processed to become compost or fuel, now helps determine the look and colour of the linoleum; true up-cycling. In creating this floor, Forbo, in addition to strengthening its natural profile, has made a wonderful and worthy contribution towards its promise to ‘create better environments’.”

Functionals /Van Esch

“The space works well. We have even already held a sales meeting here. Very relaxed. After the meeting we could, for instance, sit and continue talking on the sofa. It does add another dimension, if you are open to such things of course. Functionals and Van Esch have both supplied a number of products, including the Mirror Mirror by designer Jan Habraken and the Mr. Ed bookend, designed by Roderick Vos. Of course we live with our own products on a daily basis, but it is great to see how they are applied in real life.”

Gelderland Groep

“A project of exceptional worth, in which Dutch manufacturers can really make their mark. Thomas Eurlings knew what he wanted and was very familiar with our products. This is what made us want to collaborate. Together we decided on the side table Juffer (Pieke Bergmans) and the swivel chair 7400 (Scholten en Baijings). The end result is just fantastic. Everything ties in beautifully. The Gelderland Groep values the relationship with Design Academy very highly. As a brand we want to continue to innovate, and the fact is that young designers are the ones who innovate.”

Thomas Eyck

“I thought it was a great idea to be able to decorate an apartment using top-level Dutch design products. It does work better than creating a shop display. Now these products will actually be used, and they can be regarded in a more informal light. The result is a comfortable place to stay while you are in Eindhoven. I think the bedroom is especially beautiful, with its wallpaper that will slowly fade. It has been very inspiring to be involved in a project such as this and with a leading educational institution such as Design Academy Eindhoven.”

HEMA

“HEMA and Design Academy Eindhoven boast a partnership and an exchange of expertise that date back many years. This is expressed by things such as HEMA lectures for students and students doing traineeships or graduation projects with HEMA. With its Rijksmuseum collection, HEMA was one of the pillars of the 2008 exhibition ‘Form + Volume’ at the Designhuis. This is why it was natural for HEMA to help decorate the academy’s apartment, where Dutch design is paramount. The apartment is now home to a number of products with a distinct HEMA signature, such as stationery, kitchen and bed linens, home furnishings, tableware, glassware, and the Lapin kettle.”

B. Hullegie & S. Bongiovanni

“It is quite a challenge to imbue a newly built apartment with a sense of Design. But Thomas Eurlings has done very well and succeeded. And it is wonderful to see that it really works. The photograph we have supplied for the interior of the apartment comes from the Spectacle project, which we did with fashion designers duo And Beyond. This project focused on 3D-prints. The colour combination we used to create the 3D-effect, green, red and blue, forms a wonderful contrast with the sober furnishings in the apartment.”

Moooi

“In the past Moooi has co-operated with Design Academy Eindhoven on several occasions. It has always been our pleasure to work on creative projects with such a figurehead in art and design. For this project we have chosen three characteristic products from the Moooi collection: the Paper Chandelier and Paper Mirror by Studio Job, and the Carbon Chair by Marcel Wanders & Bertjan Pot. These products are playful, daring and exclusive. A chandelier and mirror made of paper and a chair made with carbon fibre, the same material as is used for airplanes. A must see!”

Gispen

“We thought it was a wonderful project to work on. The collaboration went very smoothly; Thomas had a list of wishes list that we were able to fulfil. We have supplied a number of products, including a Mondial chair (Gerrit Rietveld), the Bronto chair (Richard Hutten) and the Domoor (Richard Hutten); true Dutch Design. And when it comes to that, we simply had to be a part of the project. Especially in the top city for design in the Netherlands. We hope to be able to collaborate with Design Academy Eindhoven more often in the future. We like to work with young designers as they will often have a new vision and use different materials.”

Pullman

“We think furnishing an apartment for management and guests of the academy is an excellent initiative. And we are proud to be a part of this project. Our contribution consists of two models of box spring beds. The Fleur model, because it is a classic within our range; and the Jolie, because it is a new model, created by a Dutch designer (Hugo de Ruiter). With Thomas we have chosen fabrics that would fit within the colour scheme. The end result is very beautiful. It is a strong, wellbalanced and well thought-out interior.”

Quooker

“Of course, the kitchen in Design Academy Eindhoven’s management apartment simply could not do without a ‘Quooker’. This tap delivers ready-to-use boiling water in a single turn. A Dutch invention from the previous century which we now supply for one in every ten new kitchens. But it is also a typical example of Dutch Design. In the kitchen of this apartment we have installed the very first ‘twin tap’: alongside the Quooker, you will find the mixing tap, executed in the same distinct design. Collaborating with the academy is a logical step for us: they too, are a worldwide operation, set in the Netherlands, who value design and innovation above all else.”

Raw Color

“For Design Academy Eindhoven’s apartment we, as studio Raw Color, have contributed the product ‘Exposures’. Both of us, Christoph Brach and Daniera ter Haar, are Design Academy alumni, which explains the collaboration. We think this project is a wonderful example of how different design disciplines can come together in a single space. The ‘Exposures’ project is based on an experiment, in which we applied a photosensitive layer to a fabric. A specially designed machine that uses daylight creates different shades of blue. The longer the exposure time, the deeper the shade of blue.”

Royal Goedewaagen

“Royal Goedewaagen has a long history in producing both functional and decorative ceramics. For as long as 400 years all the products have been traditionally crafted in the Netherlands, mixing contemporary production techniques with solid craftsmanship and hand finishing. For Design Academy Eindhoven’s residence we have chosen some of the products from our latest DSGN collection: either a mix of traditional designs with new contemporary decorations or new contemporary designs by industrial designer Robert Bronwasser and executed with help from a range of Dutch designers and illustrators.”

Royal VKB

“Royal VKB is the new brand by Koninklijke Van Kempen & Begeer. The latter, established in 1789, was a silverware manufacturer originally, and has always adapted its product development to modern man’s living habits in contemporary society. Royal VKB represents innovative Dutch design in preparing, serving, consuming and storing fresh products. Anticipating today’s fast life, consumers’ constantly changing desires and the range of lifestyles. An important number of the designers who develop and design the Royal VKB collection have come from Design Academy Eindhoven, which is one of the reasons why Royal VKB was happy to cooperate on this project. The cooperation consisted of supplying an important part of the collection for the preparation, service and consumption of food in the apartment.

Spectrum

“Spectrum believes it is important to establish good relationships with designers and other creatives. As a Dutch company we think it is very special that all the items in our collection have been designed by both young Dutch designers and established ones, which offers us a unique way of promoting Dutch design all over the world. It goes without saying that Design Academy Eindhoven is a source of inspiration and of new young designers. The Academy’s international fame ensures a platform where we are happy to present Spectrum. For the head office, Spectrum has supplied Martin Visser’s wellknown sofa bed (BR 02.7), as well as a dining room chair by Visser, a bar stool and a side table made by Studio Parade.”

STUDIO PIET PARIS

Team van Rooij à Studio VAN

“I become involved in creating the interior for the apartment at a fairly early stage. After all, the kitchen takes up a prominent place. And it has become a unique kitchen (SKINN). One that has an outer shell around an interior, where the colour and material of the interior can be changed. Even before Design Academy Eindhoven came to me for their project, I had the design ready, waiting for someone to produce it. I will be meeting with a producer soon, who is going to see if the idea could be commercialised. So in this sense, the academy is indirectly offering me a stage.”

Textielmuseum

“It is our dream, too, to have a place where we can receive our international guests. Especially if we could have a curator such as Thomas Eurlings, who will ensure there is unity between the products. Incidentally, Thomas also designed our contribution: two damask tablecloths. And not just any damask. He has used long threads, which he has left untied in places and then cut open. This results in fraying here and there, giving the finished product a frivolous effect. Classic with a twist, exactly as he and we had envisioned.”
textielmuseum.nl

Thonet

“Thonet, which has been leading in furniture design for over 190 years, became famous for its chairs made from bent wood and steel framed furniture. Our collaboration with Design Academy is a logical next step in inspiring and nurturing talent. Thonet encourages talented young designers by sponsoring the Thonet Mart Stam award, an annual incentive award for an innovative design for a chair. Thonet EXP offers designers an opportunity to work with Thonet and to develop and produce their designs in experimental ways. Design icon S 43 by Mart Stam, which has been part of the collection since 1931, is part of the interior of the Design Academy apartment.”

Tichelaar

“When Thomas Eurlings asked us to participate in his project for Design Academy Eindhoven we immediately said yes. During the period when Alexander van Slobbe presented the “Parels van Makkum”, Thomas was working at Orson & Bodil. We are naturally very sympathetic towards the academy, not in the least because nearly all the designers we work with have been trained in Eindhoven. Hella Jongerius, Jurgen Bey, Job Smeets, Dick van Hoff and Atelier NL have all designed wonderful products for our collection. Thomas Eurlings has selected a number of products by some of these designers for the apartment. The main characteristic of our collection is that everything here is carefully and lovingly handcrafted. The strength of our earthenware lies in its ability to connect the historic with the contemporary.”

Van Besouw

“It is great to see all this Dutch design. We have to show the world the things we are proud of. And this apartment is a fine example. We, too, were asked to contribute. The carpet we have supplied was designed by Dutch industrial designer Benno Premsela. He can be viewed as the originator of the cotton carpet and as such he was one of the people who put Besouw on the map. We have had this carpet as part of our collection for forty years and it is still very much loved by people of all ages. A great example of timeless design. Something that simply had to be included in this project, we felt.”

VandycK

“The strength of our business lies in the development and production of original collections of bed and bath linens. The bed linens we have supplied for the DAE head office have been designed by Ravage. The two designers Clemens Rameckers and Arnold van Geuns together form Ravage. To them, the bedroom is almost the most important room in the apartment. With their agency Trend Union in Paris, the trend forecasting agency jointly owned by Ravage en Li Edelkoort, they create their own colour forecasts twice a year and use these in the models they then develop. The collections ‘Ravage for Vandyck’ have a luxurious appeal. The thing that Vandyck and Design Academy Eindhoven have in common is that both brands are leading and trendsetting. We have had a pleasant and professional experience collaborating on this project.”

VESCOM

“If, as a manufacturer, you consider design and technology of paramount importance, a close connection with Design Academy Eindhoven is only logical. We have been collaborating with this breeding ground for young designers for several decades. We are honoured to have been able to contribute to their head office. Our contribution consists of various types of vinyl and textile wall coverings, a digitally printed wall cover, and furniture fabrics. With the design products present in the apartment, these products form a surprising and beautiful unity. Vescom is aimed at the international projects market, offering wall coverings, furniture fabrics and curtain fabrics. We develop our patterns in collaboration with outside designers.”
