Trained as a landscape architect and industrial designer, Jerry van Eyck's hybrid education has given him an unusual breadth and depth of skills that he applies to every project under his purview. He approaches each commission balancing both the macro-scale - how open and public space fit into the larger context of a city's fabric and the urban experience, with the micro - materiality, ornamentation, and pattern as expressed through custom furniture, lighting, paving, and other details that provide each project its own singular identity. In February of 2010 Jerry Van Eyck joined forces with Urban Designer Evan Rose, with whom he founded !melk.
Jerry Van Eyck graduated Cum Laude from the Eindhoven Design Academy in 1992 and founded IRONYX, an Office/Laboratory/Workshop for Architectural Design that same year. Over the next 7 years, Jerry Van Eyck managed and designed projects across Europe, many in collaboration with West 8 urban design and landscape architecture, from Rotterdam, the Netherlands. One of his earliest collaborations with West 8, Schouwburgplein ('Theatre Square') in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, continues to be a model for contemporary urban square design, with custom furniture, iconic crane-like lights that park users can operate, and a trademarked hardscape pattern that has remarkably withstood the test of time and heavy usage. By 1999 Jerry Van Eyck traded his own practice for a full employment at West 8 and he became a partner in 2002 (-2010).
To date, Jerry Van Eyck has collaborated with and led international teams on award-winning projects and competitions that span the globe, including London’s Jubilee Gardens, the 100 acres Park for the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, Egypt, One North Park in Singapore and Lincoln Park in Miami Beach. While he was a partner at West 8, he was the project director of the team winning the international design competition for the Governors Island Park and Public Space Design in New York and after being awarded the contract, the managing principal for the Masterplan Stage of this prestigious project.
A highly respected lecturer, Jerry van Eyck has been a guest professor and critic at design schools and universities around the world, sharing his passion for urbanity, holistic approach to design and detailing, and sheer joy in the unexpected interplay of people and their environment.
