MAN AND PUBLIC SPACE

Man and Public Space is the department with the largest work terrain within Design Academy Eindhoven. Public space runs on without interruption from here to Timbuktu. From the IJmuiden fish market to the Vrijthof city square in Maastricht. From the Vechtdal in the Overrijssel province to the pavement outside your front door.

Depending on the program, public space can take on a range of different characters. On a quiet Monday morning the city will not look the same as it will on market days or during the marathon. It is no different in rural areas; where the Lowlands festival is pitching its tents today, the cows may graze tomorrow. Designers play a major role in both the lay-out of all these areas and in the design of special programs and events they accommodate. Public Space designers will record and analyse customs and experiences within specific environments after which they will develop programs, products and services. To do so they will usually collaborate with residents, architects, urban designers and landscape architects. Working as part of a team is an important aspect of the ‘Man and Public Space’ department.
Students will conduct their research not only in Eindhoven, but in cities and landscapes across Europe. Shaping the beauty in daily life; this is our ambitious objective at ‘Man and Public Space’.

With the project ‘Landinwaarts, van Dordt tot de Biesbosch’ (Inland, from Dordrecht to the Biesbosch), commissioned by the Dordrecht municipality, Design Academy Eindhoven is for the third time presenting its views on and solutions to a set of urban, cultural-historical and social issues. Previous projects have been ‘Dordrecht TM’(2008) and ‘Welkom!’(2009).

This year, Design Academy Eindhoven students were briefed to ‘unlock’ the Biesbosch ‘both mentally and physically’. Focal points have been the connections between the town and the country, the land and the water, and the use of the Biesbosch area. The main condition was that recreation and nature rehabilitation should reinforce each other. The Biesbosch is one of the larger areas of natural beauty in the Netherlands with an international reputation (for its natural beauty), stretching out into the provinces of Zuid-Holland and Brabant.

EVELINE VISSER
BIRD CITY

Eveline Visser has designed Bird City,
a city for a mixed bird community. 33
Nesting boxes, catering for the housing
needs of 33 different species of birds, to
form a breeding ground for the winged
inhabitants of the city. The design
requires quite a delicate touch: the blue
tit wants an opening with a 28 millimetre
diameter; the great tit wants 32 mm, and
the tawny owl will not enter below 80.
