Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) is a state-funded Higher Vocational Education (HBO) institute that focuses exclusively on training designers. The course is internationally known and recognised and DAE is considered one of the “leading design schools in the world”. The Academy employs about 75 FTEs and has places for more than 700 students. Seventy percent of the students come from abroad and 45 nationalities are represented at DAE.

Design Academy Eindhoven offers a 4-year Bachelor's degree course and a 2-year Master's degree course. A preparatory course and a summer school are also under development. A new institutional plan and vision on education are being prepared for the coming period.

The Director of Education and Research is responsible for all aspects of education. The courses are given by a mix of department heads and lecturers on short-term and long-term contracts, guest lecturers and specialists from the professional field, who are deployed on flexible schedules. The educational activities mainly take place in 'De Witte Dame', DAE's location in Eindhoven.

Design Academy Eindhoven is internationally oriented and has a strong relationship with the creative industry, the culture sector and an extensive international network.

Job Profile
The Director of Education & Research is one of three Executive Board Members, together with the Creative Director and the Director of Organisation. They are jointly responsible for Design Academy Eindhoven. The Executive Board is accountable to the Supervisory Board. All Board Members have a part-time position.

The Director of Education & Research has final responsibility for the content of the education and research programme. The Director of Education & Research works together with the Creative Director to ensure an appropriate match between the educational content and design. The Director of Organisation coordinates organisational implementation of the teaching and research process.

Responsibilities of the Director of Education & Research:

  • has final responsibility for the content and quality of the Bachelor's and Master's degree courses and the research activities, and for ensuring that this programme adequately reflects Design Academy Eindhoven’s overall vision on design;
  • develops education and research from a substantive and educational perspective, based on a good knowledge of and feel for international developments in design, culture and the creative industry;
  • is responsible for providing high-quality design education;
  • maintains contacts with and represents

Design Academy Eindhoven in international administration/content-oriented educational fora and discussions with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science.

Competencies and Job Requirements
The following characteristics, knowledge and competencies are required for the Director of Education & Research profile (ranked according to the weighting in the profile):

  • a love of education and research, a lively interest in the well-being of students, lecturers, department heads, assistant professors and teaching staff, and an ability to build on a vision of quality that is shared by all;
  • an open mind, an eye for and ability to put diversity to positive use, and a willingness to experiment;
  • a vision on design and art education and its future, the ability to translate this vision into policy and goals for Design Academy Eindhoven and make the necessary choices when doing so;
  • knowledge of different research perspectives in relation to design education (Higher Vocational Education, University Education, BA and MA);
  • an academic background or proven experience at a comparable level in the education and training sector;
  • clearly demonstrable affinity and/or experience with the design world, creative industry and the culture sector;
  • knowledge of international educational developments and current themes in the field of art education;
  • capable of conducting substantive discussions with governments and administrative bodies;
  • creates cohesion in a complex organization and knows how to build and connect;
  • leader and team player at the same time based on commitment, empathy and conviction;
  • capable of maintaining an open dialogue with students, teachers and the internal education organisation;
  • excellent communication skills in Dutch and English;
  • flexible use of time in view of the DAE agenda and external commitments.

Terms and Conditions of Employment
The remuneration is in line with the scope and responsibilities of the position and complies with the limits set by the Act for standardisation of publicly and semi publicly financed remuneration of top managers (Wet Normering Topinkomens/WNT). As an indication, the annual salary for this position lies between €130,000 and €140,000 WNT class D (for a full-time position).

Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE) is worldwide one of the leading educational institutes in the field of Design. The various departments within the four-year Bachelor programme and the two-year Master programme train students from different perspectives to produce critical and socially engaged designers.

Besides the educational programmes, DAE has two international lectorates focussed on collaborative research projects.

The programmes within DAE share the political values of an inclusive society that embraces diversity in every aspect. In addition, the hybrid, conceptual, contextual and international approach to design is characteristic for the programmes within DAE.

DAE sees design as a means to reflect on social developments and problems and as an aid to look for and explore alternatives. The fact that many nationalities and cultures meet here, enriches our work area and contributes to the validity of the projects in a worldwide context.

In addition to being an educational institute, DAE functions as a cultural institute. This interaction is one of the most important building blocks for both our curricula and our research agenda and enables DAE to train people who are capable of making meaningful contributions to social developments around the world.

As a zBar employee, you work in a creative, inspiring environment, on the sixth floor of the Witte Dame. You are part of an enthusiastic team of eight staff members. In the open kitchen you prepare a varied assortment of breakfast, lunch and dinner dishes for students, employees and external relations. In addition, you take care of the catering of events such as graduation ceremonies and meetings. Our food is internationally oriented, reflecting the global origins of our student population, which features as many as 60 different nationalities. We work primarily with sustainable ingredients. As a zBar chef, you can draw on your own creativity; there is plenty of room for your ideas and personal development. You work during the day, on weekdays as well as some evenings, during special occasions at the academy.

Tasks and responsibilities

  • Preparing the dishes featured on the menu and replenishing the range of products in the displays and refrigerators;
  • Preparing and serving dishes for special events and meetings, such as lunches with large numbers of guests (incl. planning and supervision of extra staff);
  • Necessary maintenance (to conduct yourself and to outsource) and cleaning. You also contribute to the required paperwork (relating to financial administration and hygiene regulations, for example);
  • Training new colleagues;
  • Organising and executing the running of zBar and proposing improvements;
  • Helping customers at the counter and preparing orders.

Candidate profile

  • A completed chef’s course at a minimum secondary vocational level of MBO-3;
  • An interest in preparing international dishes;
  • Professional knowledge of catering and hospitality and the corresponding rules and regulations;
  • Customer-friendly manner;
  • A real team player;
  • Able to speak both Dutch and English;
  • Based in or around Eindhoven;
  • Short-term availability (preferable).

Our offer

We offer a challenging position in a dynamic working environment. Hours are determined in consultation.
Salary indication: scale 5. The employment terms are in accordance with the collective wage agreement CAO-HBO, including the 8.3% end-of-year bonus. Initially, a temporary position is offered, with the option of an extension.
