The propagation of the butt as the focal point of the female body is a political statement.  It is a sign of the integration of different cultures, and their beauty ideals, into Western society. It is also a revenge for minorities, for the African and Caribbean and even Queer cultures.

The new image given by the buttocks empowers those subgroups and makes their aesthetics become a new beauty ideal. 

The buttocks era presents meaning that contains—among others—the history of African tribes and colonised countries. This meaning is shifting from one culture to the other, from one historical context, one community or subculture to another. The re-interpretation of those meanings through the examination of images, establishes a link between image and culture. The visual language itself does not only reflect the world as it is, but at the same time it is producing a new cultural meaning through its representation. In this way, the boundaries between image and reality are becoming blurred. 

The buttocks are strictly related to visual culture and the way information, meaning and pleasure is sought by the consumer. What started (in hip hop) as the promotion of African shapes and in general a healthier body type, was appropriated by mass culture and with it, its meaning. For many people the buttocks reflect a lifestyle connected to sport and Instagram photography, though, the pictures often exaggerate reality. With the increasing production of images, the relationship between image and reality has become complex. Sociologist Ervin Goffman speaks of “hyper-ritualizing”. This occurs when the social use of images takes a separate, almost autonomous path of development, by shaping a world of its own. However, there is not a single relationship between image and meaning, every image has its own realm of possible meanings. 

The interpretation of the image always depends to a large extent on the observer. Images function in a subcultural context and they create meaning for that specific subculture. What needs to be questioned is whether the distinction between image and reality can be maintained. Of course this is not the first time that this question has been asked. Philosophers have long claimed that society has become one big spectacle, where image and reality overlap. 

The butt is an example that shows a paradoxical situation. It stands for homosexuality as well as for femininity. It, we might argue, is a genderless object. Since the ‘gender’ definition of the Oxford dictionary is no longer current “Either of the two sexes (male and female)”, the blurry borders between gender create the perfect conditions for the rise of the butt. The butt has also helped create a stronger image of the ‘bombshell’, the classical curvy woman. Taking this into consideration the research concentrates mostly on the effects and consequences the butt has on the ‘supposedly female’ body.
