Fundamentals

In the Fundamentals programme you build the methods, skills and insights that form the basis of contemporary design practice

The Fundamentals programme starts with a broad introduction in the first year and continues into the second year and first semester of the third year. After this semester you enter the final phase of the BA programme. It runs alongside the Studios and consists of three areas:

DESIGN STUDIES

In Design Studies you develop your creativity by exploring the formal aspects of design and the design process itself.

You work with methods for finding the right form, colour, texture, scale and narrative for your work: form and colour research, drawing and painting, moving image, sound and performance, design research, concept development, project management, and communication skills.

PRODUCTION STUDIES

In Production Studies you learn how materials, their properties and techniques work, and how to translate ideas into tangible outcomes. You gain insight into a range of materials, (digital) production processes, mechanics, cost calculation, and emerging technologies.

You develop your understanding of material semantics, expression and experience. Alongside what you already know and can do, you are challenged to explore new ones.

CONTEXTUAL STUDIES

In Contextual Studies you inform your work with insights from the world around you and translate your research into concepts or narrative outcomes. You work with different research methodologies, writing, design history and theory, and learn how to position yourself as a designer.

Contextual Studies examines the theoretical, social and historical contexts from which projects derive meaning. It introduces ideas from different disciplines and questions the roles, responsibilities and methodologies of design in society, and contributes to developing visions and strategies for a more sustainable future.
