The WETsus Conference paper, “Balancing Institutional Space and Participatory Space to Deal with Issues of Water Imbalance: An Institutional and Design Perspective,” is a collaboration between the University of Groningen (RUG) and the Design Academy Eindhoven (DAE). It explores how institutional approaches (RUG) and participatory methods (DAE) can complement each other in addressing urban regeneration challenges.
The paper responds to the conference’s central question regarding the transition from GDP-driven growth to sustainable development of non-monetary "area capital." It provides a framework and tools to assist decision-makers and local actors in balancing institutional and participatory spaces, aligning participation processes with project goals and area-specific needs. The insights are adaptable to European regional contexts and promote the integration of local activities into broader spatial and functional networks.
