Fundamentals Year 1
Semester 1 & 2
Design Studies
What will you learn?
You build skills and knowledge of the formal aspects of design and learn to express yourself in 2D, 3D and time-based media. With room to think and act freely, you work empirically and experimentally and go through the design cycle: exploring, creating, presenting and reflecting. You develop concepts and translate them into outcomes that communicate to an audience.
Keywords
Video, narration, sound, performance, 3D modelmaking, 2D & 3D sketching, painting, drawing, artistic research, presentation and communication
Production Studies
What will you learn?
You learn about the semantics, expression and experience of materials. Through a hands-on iterative process, you explore contrast, structure, texture, tactility, colour, surface and material properties, taking the possibilities and limitations of materials and techniques into account. You apply this in prototyping, concept development and a final materialised outcome.
Keywords
Ceramics, metal, plastics, wood, textile, 3D fabrication, UX/UI, AI
Contextual Studies
What will you learn?
You explore discourses in the design field, covering history, the stories told about it, and design theory. These connect to philosophical, social, economic and political issues.
You learn different research and writing methods, and gather information through archival, participatory and field research. This research becomes a narrative outcome that can take the form of a text, film, map, object, installation or publication.
