Jan Konings
School with Jan Konings
Thursday 20th February, 19h00-20h30 CET
Witte Dame Zaal, 5th Floor of DAE
About the lecture
How is it that the Design Academy has been recognised for its forward-thinking for multiple generations? Is this recognition well-deserved, an overestimation, or simply a continuing desire? Is it about patiently cultivating a still admirable tradition, or is it a desperate return to a past peak?
Due to practical necessity, the school must move to a new location. An inevitable opportunity to reflect on what a school is or could be. In this lecture, based on personal projects and experiences with both formal and informal schools, the possibilities are explored for how forward-thinking could shape the school itself.

Bio
Jan Konings is an autodidact designer of public space, working at the intersection of urban planning, architecture, landscape, art, activism and design. He has never left school. Currently he goes to MA Contextual Design at Design Academy Eindhoven one day a week.
Design is not just a functional response to social or practical needs, but also a way to shape deeper desires and fears. True needs lie in dreams, which can sometimes be complex, uncomfortable, elusive, melancholic, risky, and chaotic, but also adventurous, surprising, reassuring, and challenging.
