Becoming a Noob

Anouk Sébastien

Becoming a Noob' (re)introduces creatives to their tools for text and image editing, the terminal. While the day-to-day use of technologies may be driven by a need to communicate, the project challenges the use of complex software that's produced and by large, corporate software houses and guides users to discover autonomous digital practices, which are usually exclusive to coders and engineers. Driven by an urge to re-appropriate our machines, facing the limited resources on the planet to build new hardwares, Anouk Sébastien explores the value of regaining a degree of freedom through simpler, more accessible digital creative tools.

Fueled by research into the gap between software and hardware, the designer presents a website that hosts web-to-print zines, that works as an autonomous online repository. The zines present methodologies for understanding the machine and using the terminal for creative purposes, activated through workshops. The project encourages a sustainable and conscious use of computers and provides users with an opportunity to network within the conviviality of learning together.
