Clatterwaulers
Outdated machinery may no longer serve its original purpose, yet its function and capacity for movement often remain intact. Ilse van Dijk transforms three discarded domestic tools from the pre-digital era — a treading table, fretsaw and air compressor. Drawing on their unique mechanics, he reactivates and redirects their latent movement toward sound production. The resulting experimental instruments fuse the machines’ original sounds with those introduced by his alterations, challenging the player to adapt to the machine’s existing rhythm. As these instruments are still new territory, musicians are free to approach them intuitively; no one is an expert at playing them yet. ‘Clatterwaulers’ is well suited to contexts that emphasise live, visible sound — like sound-based theatre, puppetry, or foley-driven storytelling.
