The worlds is burning (and I want to do my part)

Dirk Schoutens

Mobile, self-built wood-fired kilns made from salvaged materials and fuelled with wood scraps challenge conventional ways of working with ceramics. Inspired by historic firing techniques, Dirk Schoutens created kilns that can be dismantled and transported, allowing for collaboration in changing environments. The process demands patience because heat builds slowly over hours, requiring constant attention as flames are fed by hand. The results are unpredictable, with surfaces shaped by fire and chance rather than control. Each firing becomes a shared experience, where the outcome is less important than the act of making together. ‘The World is Burning (and I want to do my part)’ invites others to let go of perfection and embrace experimentation, showing how limitation and imperfection can open up space for creativity, community and new forms of craftsmanship.
