The Floor is Lava

Jack Austin

The Floor is Lava' presents a new material which combines properties of stone and glass referencing the basalt plateau formations of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. These layered formations have developed during the Paleogene period, as eruptions of magma broke through rock fissures and formed Skye's severe, yet, serine basaltic landscape.

'The Floor is Lava' challenges its designer to reenact this violent geological process creating a material that reminds of obsidian, through alchemic experimentation with basalt rubble and standardised glass bottles passing different stages of homogeneity. Taking the shape of whisky vessels, the material bridges Scotland’s geological and cultural landscapes, as whisky, a long-standing source of warmth and connection, is deeply tied to the land. By re-melting basalt and glass, the project grounds the ritual in its origins, linking material, place, and experience.

Developed under the guidance of Lucas Maassen and glass maker Marc Barreda.
