The release of generative AI models has spawned an unprecedented amount of services aimed at automating digitally executed labour – if enough data can be collected, it can be automated. For Tijn Geerts, this is becoming increasingly common for some of the creative tasks that bring him the most joy. Responding to this abstraction of the work he loves, Tijn created a browser-based multiplayer game with an interface that satirises the global shifts these tech companies are invoking. Using head-tracking as the game’s controls, each participant is turned into a worm-like creature, whose physical presence alone becomes labour. The goal? Outlast other players in an ongoing death match – either kill or be killed. In an endgame of endless automation, our very presence could become the final commodity. Against this backdrop, the game invites us to ask: how is value determined?
