born under thread
‘born under thread’ is a research-based installation that reimagines computing through the embodied, tactile act of weaving. By interlacing conductive threads with microcomputers, the work transforms a loom into an active, responsive system in which touch and rhythm shape how information is transmitted and received.
The installation aims to pull computation down from the cloud and into the hands, treating it as a process rooted in materiality and presence. It builds a temporary network where human interaction becomes the interface, and where the labour behind systems is made visible.
Grounded in permacomputing principles and concerns, it questions dominant narratives of speed and progress. The installation draws on the historical link between weaving and computing, highlighting how both fields have relied on undervalued, often invisible labour, particularly by women. The project highlights how digital systems have become extractive and abstracted — and proposes computational programming as something touchable, situated and relational.
