Uprising Canopy

Céleste Zion

The 'Uprising Canopy’ is a form of occupation architecture built entirely by hand from fallen trees. Having participated in forest occupations, designer Céleste Zion gives form to the tension experienced by forest defence movements in southern France. The project allows care, autonomy, and solidarity to take root and re-sprout, even after the trees are gone.

At its heart is a raised platform, 3.3 metres above the ground, surrounded by branches filled with tools for non-violent occupations, including musical instruments, cassette players, goggles, a tea kit, and a hammock. A sound performance exploring the act of healing activists’ trauma activates the installation.

Alongside, a smaller structure holds a Cathode-Ray TV, showing archival photographs of the A69 forest occupation and ZAD of the 'Crem’arbre' in 2024, an inter-species autonomous protest zone opposing the controversial construction of a private highway.
