Research Report: Archival Encounters
(February 2026)
The research Report "Archiving Encounters" traces a decade-long collaboration between Design Academy Eindhoven and the village of Veenhuizen, exploring how design can engage with place, history, and community. What began in 2012 as a modest educational experiment with students immersing themselves in the local context to practice “embedded design" has evolved into a sustained research partnership connecting designers, institutions, and residents.
Through the Social Innovation Lab (SI-LAB), this collaboration has deepened into an exploration of design’s role in social innovation, heritage interpretation, and collective memory. Projects have ranged from mapping and storytelling exercises to archival research and interactive game design, all reimagining how the cultural landscape of Veenhuizen can be experienced and understood today.
The publication reflects on this decade of learning, collaboration, and creative experimentation. It highlights the shift from individual student projects to an interdisciplinary platform where design, history, and community converge – enriching both design education and public engagement with heritage. It stands as both a record of what has been achieved and an invitation to continue learning with Veenhuizen.
