Health Insurance
If you are studying in the Netherlands, having health insurance is mandatory by law. Travel insurance alone is not sufficient.
Before You Arrive
Before coming to the Netherlands, make sure to check:
- Whether your current insurance covers your entire stay abroad
- What kind of medical costs are included
Types of Health Insurance
There are three main types of health insurance for students:
1. European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you are from:
- An EU country
- Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland
- You may be able to use your home country insurance through the EHIC.
- You can apply for an EHIC for free via your local health authority check this link for details Applying for the European Health Insurance Card - Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion
- It covers basic and emergency healthcare
- Important: EHIC may not cover all medical costs in the Netherlands. You may need additional insurance for full coverage.
2. Private Health Insurance
You will need private health insurance if:
- You do not have an EHIC
- You are not working part-time in the Netherlands
- There are special insurance plans for international students.

- You earn more than the minimum wage
- Once this applies to you, you must arrange Dutch insurance immediately.

- Important:
- Not everything is included in the basic package
- You may need extra coverage (for example, dental care)
- Always check with your insurer what is covered.
