Going to a doctor

Having a GP in The Netherlands is fundamental for several reasons, besides being your first point of contact it is also required for accessing other important services.

For non-urgent physical or mental health issues, your first step is to contact a general practitioner (GP) (in Dutch: huisarts).​

To receive care, you must first register with a GP.​

What you need to register:​

  • Valid ID​
  • BSN (Burger Service Nummer – your personal ID number)​
  • Health insurance details (company and policy number)​
  • Some GP practices allow online registration.​
  • You can make an appointment by phone or via the GP’s website.​
  • GPs only see patients who are registered at their practice.​
  • You can usually only register with a GP in your postal code area.​

​First appointment:​

Bring:​

  • Any medical records from your home country​
  • A list of medications you are currently taking​

Good to know: Most doctors in the Netherlands speak English.​

Register with a Pharmacy (Apotheek)​

To collect prescribed medication, you also need to register with a pharmacy.​

  • Choose one close to your home​
  • Your GP can recommend a pharmacy​
  • Or search: “apotheek Eindhoven + your postal code”​

Bring:​

  • Your ID​
  • Your health insurance card​
