Parks

Believe it or not but Eindhoven is one of the most green cities of the Netherlands, especially when you go anywhere a little outside of the city you will find acres of green. For swimming possibilities, you can check https://www.zwemwater.nl/ for information on the water quality. There's many cute parks in Eindhoven, here they are listed and specified: 

  • Genneper Parken - Great, for biking, petting farm animals at the farm and wandering around 
  • Anne frank plantsoen - Solid, great for picnics, close to the city centre, good meeting spot 
  • Stadswandelpark - Good strolling park, with statues, (in the summer) there are frequently events here 
  • Philips van Lenneppark - Free sportspots (tennis court, basketball etc), animal farm, skatepark 
  • Philips de Jonghpark - Lovely to walk here, big trees. If you keep cycling north-ish from here, you can reach other cute towns around like Oirschot 
  • Dommelplantsoen - Bordering Genneper Park and the prehistoric village 
  • Henri Dunantpark - Open air playground! Fun for all ages 
  • Karpendonkse plas - Nice for sports and picnics, parkrun hosts free 5km running events on the weekend here check: https://www.parkrun.co.nl/karpendonkseplas/ 
  • Gat van Waalre (the square lake) - Big big lake, great for swimming. Area around is lots to explore 
  • Recreatieplas Hanevoet - Cute swimming/hang spot

Dutch holidays

  • Carnaval (carnival) 
    The (catholic) south of The Netherlands celebrates carnival annually in February and is integral to Eindhoven culture. The city is in full party mode and everybody dresses up for a week, woohooo! For more info: Beginner’s guide  
  • Sinterklaas  

National celebration on 5 December. Generally regarded as the Dutch equivalent of Christmas, Sinterklaas is a holiday where people get together with loved ones to exchange gifts. It is especially a big deal for young children who receive sacks of presents from Sinterklaas and his helpers, the Pieten. 

  • King’s day (koningsdag) 

If you are in The Netherlands and not partying on this day (27 April), you had better be throwing up. King’s day is the national holiday on which officially we celebrate Willem-Alexander’s (the king’s) birthday. It used to be queens day when we still had a queen (Beatrix) but Willie moved it to his own date of birth… A few traditions: 

  • Fleamarket: everybody, everywhere (many different spots at least, biggest one is in Stadswandelpark). People their old gunk from the attic and puts it on the street to sell  
  • Raising the national flag with an orange ribbon 
  • Everybody wears orange (or white/blue/red for those who don’t have orange clothing) 
  • Oranje tompouce (pastry) 
  • King’s Night (Koningsnacht): party party everywhere on 26 April, night before King’s day. Some consider it the main event. Lots of beer. 

Queer Groups 

  • CoC Eindhoven: oldest LGBTQ+ rights organisation in the Netherlands, they provide education, advocate politically and ensure a safe haven. Check them out via @COCEindhoven 
  • Yunge Eindhoven: Offers a support group and several kinds of meetings for trans people between 12 and 26 years old. Check them out via @yunge_eindhoven  
  • Gendermore Eindhoven: Offering support groups and other activities for people of all ages, from across the whole gender spectrum. Check them out via @moregendermore 
  • Expreszo Eindhoven: Open to anyone in the LGBTQ+ community between 18 and 26 years. Varying monthly activities. Check them out via @ExpreszoEindhoven 
  • Queerhoven: Aiming to provide safe(r) spaces and a network for queer activities and gatherings. They organise sport events, craft days and D&D sessions! Check them out via @Queerhoven 
  • The Wave Eindhoven: local feminist community that organises events, book clubs and radio shows. Check them out via @thewave.eindhoven
