Social Design: Student Projects

GABRIEL FONTANA

MULTIFORM

Sport is not only an activity, but also a power structure that positions bodies, identities and subjectivities in a disciplined framework. The quest for an alternative social model falls within the action of stepping out of the straight line, where the reorientation of the body in sport practice itself becomes an act of queering. By considering the embodied practice of sport as a performance of wider social structures, the game Multiform developed bodily experiences and performative acts as

tools to understand, deconstruct and challenge normative logics. The project uses the vocabulary of sport as common ground to challenge the way we usually oppose others by allowing players to perform multiple roles. In this context, the introduction of a new sport outfit deconstructs the uniform as a wearable artefact that defines the player as being part of one stable group. By celebrating interchangeability and fluid identities, the game re-invents strategies for new societal values inside and outside the sport field.
